Autism & Behavioural Science - Ontario Graduate Certificate

The Autism and Behavioural Science Ontario College Graduate Certificate program is designed for students who have completed a recognized diploma or degree program in the areas of education or human services (graduates of Social Service Worker, Child and Youth Worker, Early Childhood Education, Educational Assistant, or Developmental Service Worker).

The objective of the program is to build on the student’s previous training, with a specialization in the area of autism spectral disorders assessment and treatment. Training will focus primarily on working with children who have autism or behavioural challenges. Students will be introduced to a variety of procedures used to assess and treat challenging behaviours.

If you are currently working in a school special education department, day care, or social services position, consider adding this unique certificate to your education. All courses are offered through distance learning.

Canadore College, Northern College and Confederation College will all be providing classes towards this certificate.

Introduction to Autism

This course examines the five major syndromes of the Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) including Autism, Asperger Syndrome, Rett Syndrome, Childhood Disintegrative Disorder, and Pervasive Developmental Disorder NOS, according to their core features and their diagnostic criteria. This course provides an introduction to a neurodevelopmental and behavioural understanding of children with ASD.

Working with Families and Teams

Sessions: 15; Hours: 45
This course presents students with theories, terminology and applications underlying current approaches to teamwork and working with the families of children with Autism Spectrum Disorders. The focus will be on effective collaboration with a multi-disciplinary team, which is essential to successful intensive behavioural intervention. Prerequisite: Acceptance into the Autism and Behavioural Science Graduate Certificate program.
