This course provides students with the knowledge and content related to geographic mapping. Tools and skills will be utilized to gather and relate measured data spatially. These tools will include the use of a Global Positioning System (GPS), mapping software, digital imagery and Geographical Information System (GIS) software. The learner will use a variety of spatial tools and software applications including digital maps and standard forms of data input.

The course will cover the collection, management, analysis and presentation of spatial data. Additional topics will include concepts of database systems, data modeling and digital mapping.

GIS Software - ArcView

At the end of this course, the student should be able to create data in ArcView, Query and manipulate data, geocode addresses, perform Spatial Analyses, and produce map outputs and charts. Included with the book is a fully-functioning 180-day trial version of ArcView 9 software on CD-ROM with data for the book’s exercises. Students will require Windows NT version 4, Windows 2000 or Windows XP to install the Version 9 program. Prerequisite: CEA127 Introduction to Geographic Information Systems.
