Cross-Cultural Awareness Sessions:
This training provides greater sensitivity to Aboriginal issues for participants whose organizations or businesses interact with Aboriginal people and/or clients. Sessions are designed to create greater awareness of Aboriginal peoples, cultures, and contemporary issues, and to promote mutual understanding and enhanced communication among people of differing cultural backgrounds.
Media Issues Forums:
These forums are designed to enhance awareness of Aboriginal issues and create networking opportunities for Aboriginal and mainstream journalists, professional communicators, educators, students, and members of the general public. Participants discuss how Aboriginal peoples and issues are portrayed in the mass media and the impact of good and bad journalistic practices on public policy issues affecting Native Canadians.
Cultural (Anishinabek) Teachings:
Anishinabek elders and facilitators share traditional teachings and knowledge that provide schools, clubs, organizations, and agencies with unique insights into the history and cultural values of First Peoples.
Media Spokesperson Training:
This skill development focused training will benefit participants responsible for issuing news releases, responding to media inquiries, and conducting news conferences for their Aboriginal organization or business.
Training and public education initiatives of the NIIJII (Friends) Communications Institute are delivered by the Union of Ontario Indians Communications Unit, which provides communications advisory services and media relations for the Union of Ontario Indians and its 43 member First Nations. In addition, the unit publishes the Anishinabek News, a monthly newspaper that was established in 1988.
