Imagine getting the scoop on a major breaking news story or being the first reporter on the scene of a police raid. In the Journalism field you could be interviewing your favourite celebrity one day and the next you could be covering the winning hockey game. Few careers can present such diverse opportunities.
Canadore’s three-year Journalism - Print and Broadcast program prepares students to enter this fast-paced field. Students will learn to conduct background research, plan and conduct interviews, take photographs, shoot video and record audio. They will have the opportunity to do live on-air interviews and read newscasts for the college’s radio and television stations; they will also write and photograph for publication in the college’s online student newspaper, theclaw.ca. The program’s final year brings those skills together as the students prepare for a seven-week work placement in the industry, where they put theory into practice.
The program’s focus is on helping the student create and expand a portfolio of work that displays skills across a number of media including radio, television, newspapers, magazines and the Internet. Professional portfolios maximize the graduate’s chance of securing a journalist’s job by proving they have a wide range of skills to meet the challenges of a demanding industry.
Students must have excellent oral and written communication skills, some familiarity with still and video photography, and exhibit computer skills. They will also need to be creative and motivated, as well as be up-to-date and interested in current events. Having completed a Media Studies or Mass Media course is an added bonus.

STUDENT QUOTES
“I chose Canadore because I knew I would be able to receive a lot of one-on-one training with the professors here, which I knew I would not receive if I went to a larger college.
I’ve gained valuable knowledge from my professors who have worked in the journalism field in the past and who are still involved in reporting. The Journalism - Print and Broadcast program has given me the opportunity to talk with interesting and important members of the community, and bring vital information forward to the public.”
Debby Fisher
