Fine Crafts

In this fast-paced, technology driven world, the loss of a sense of identity can be a real threat. In this scenario, the role of the craftsman or “handworker” can be most fulfilling. The sense of warmth and care which the handmade object possesses is essential to the enrichment of our lives. The skilled craftsman can provide both functional and decorative objects which, by their sensitivity and beauty, will add this missing dimension to our lives.

The craftsman may work as a self-employed manufacturer of functional ware or may find designing and building prototypes for related industry more rewarding. The skills of the craftsman include a good sense of design and an extensive awareness of the aesthetics related to the material being used. The foundation of this program involves an intense study of design in both two and three dimensions.

The second year of the program emphasizes studio practice, to allow learners to develop their skills and apply them to a portfolio of work. Students will be expected to dedicate time to studio work outside of regularly scheduled class hours.
