If you care about the environment and would like to make a difference, then this program is for you. The Environmental Technician program is designed to create well-trained and diversely skilled graduates who wish to pursue a career in the environmental industry. The job opportunities for a graduate of this program are plentiful on the provincial, national and global scale. A graduate from this program could choose to work in the field, in a laboratory or in an office setting.

Admission Requirements


Ontario Secondary School Diploma at or above the general level or its equivalent (GED or College and Career Prep). Grade 12 English is required.

Mature Students:
Applicants aged 19 or over without the OSSD will be considered on the basis of their results on the College’s Mature Student Test.

Graduates of the new Ontario Secondary School Curriculum:
Ontario Secondary School Diploma with courses from the College (C), University (U), University/ College (M), or Open (O) preparation levels.

Required courses:
Any one of the following:

  • OSSD (or equivalent, GED, College and Career Prep) with majority of senior level courses at the College (C) or University (U) or University/ College (M) Levels; it is recommended that applicants have at least one senior science credit

OR

  • Completion of Canadore College Pre-Health Program or equivalent

OR

  • Mature Applicants: Ontario residents aged 19 or over without the OSSD will be considered on the basis of their results on the College’s Mature Student Test.

University and similar program graduates welcome! Advanced standing is determined on an individual basis.

Recommended courses:

  • Senior level Biology, Chemistry or Physics and Math
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office
 

Hands-on Experience
Theoretical knowledge is complemented with field trips, a tentative four-day field camp, hands-on laboratory sessions and practical outdoor field experience. Field work is conducted on the beautiful boreal forested campus, on local lakes, and at the field camp. Laboratory sessions are conducted in one of Canadore’s large, well-equipped laboratories.

Small Class Sizes
If you wish to gain quality education and training in small class sizes (14 students per lab, 42 students per class), from skilled and knowledgeable professionals, then this program will surpass your needs.

Operator in Training Certification (OIT)
Students who are interested in pursuing a career in water/waste water treatment are prepared to challenge the provincial OIT exam at the end of the fourth semester.

 
MINISTRY OF THE ENVIRONMENT ENTRY LEVEL COURSE FOR DRINKING WATER OPERATORS

Students who successfully complete this course will have met the requirements of the Ministry of the Environment’s Entry-Level Course for Drinking Water Operators. This course is delivered by Canadore College in partnership with the Ministry of the Environment and the Walkerton Clean Water Centre.

 
Environmental Field Camp
During your four semesters at Canadore, you are encouraged to participate in environmental field camps. Modern cabins and food are included in the minimal cost to attend this five day, four-night field camp. Students apply “hands-on” experience in GPS navigation, GIS technology, obtain Pleasure Craft Operator Card and GPS Greencheck certification, learn about current sustainable forestry practices, perform an aquatic stream assessment and an environmental assessment. Field camps are tentatively scheduled each year.
