Creating a Respectful Environment

Taking Responsibility for Your Living and Learning Environment

The Canadore 2012 Strategic Vision states that we focus on both student life and classroom experience. This means that every experience that you encounter along your educational path is an opportunity for learning through personal or professional growth.

It is anticipated that your interactions within the student and college community are positive ones. However, when things don’t go as anticipated the college has an obligation to investigate and to take action in situations requiring restitution to an individual (s) and/or the college community or a reprimand. Appropriate restitution may include an apology, an assignment, a monetary fine and/or a referral to a college/student service that leads to facilitated learning and professional growth. Appropriate reprimands may include restricted privileges, short-term suspension, and dismissal from the Institution, or referral to police agencies for further action.

Academic Integrity

Canadore College is committed to ensuring fair and equitable treatment of all members of its community while maintaining the academic integrity of programs and curriculum. We are committed to an academic climate conducive to learning, free from disruptive or inappropriate behaviour.

The use of electronic or other devices in the classroom is strictly prohibited unless authorized by faculty.

Discrimination and Harassment

Canadore College is committed to providing a superior working environment for our faculty and staff, and through them, an exceptional living and learning environment for our students and clients. Interaction between members of the College is based on mutual respect, trust, cooperation and understanding inherent in an adult learning community.

Code of Conduct

It is expected that all persons will respect the personal and property rights of individuals and of the college, and that all persons will conduct themselves in accordance with the laws of the land and all commonly accepted conventions of behaviour.

Disruptive Conduct

We define disruptive conduct as any behaviour that has an adverse effect on (a) the rights of students to benefit from instruction or services provided by the College, (b) the rights and functions of employees of the College, or (c) the rights and functions of third parties who are engaged in helping the College achieve its educational objectives.

Behaviours which insult the personal dignity of others (including harassment, bullying, discrimination, violence, threat of violence, and/or any other threatening behaviour) are contrary to the philosophy and conventions of Canadore College. The College has the authority to take appropriate action in instances of departure from the expected standard of behaviour. The range of such actions includes reprimands, restricted privileges, short term suspension, and dismissal from the Institution, and possible referral to police agencies for further action.

What does all this mean?

It means that we have great expectations of you! We are committed to providing a superior living and learning environment for all members of the college community. An informal guideline to follow is to ask yourself if the behaviour is appropriate to a professional workplace environment.

Our expectations in Creating a Respectful Student Community apply to all Campus activities, inside and outside the classroom, and include participants in all Campus/College sponsored or sanctioned activities on and off Campus. All members of the College are reminded to think carefully about how they portray themselves or others and/or represent the College in communication and social networking vehicles such as YouTube, Face Book, MySpace, or blogs to which employers and the general public have access.

How Do I Deal With Inappropriate Behaviour?

Ideally, as long as you feel at ease doing it, we ask that you find a time to quietly let the other person(s) know that an action or behaviour makes you uncomfortable. Most of us would rather hear directly from a peer than from a third party. Keeping an attitude of being open to feedback makes it easier for others to give us feedback. This process also ensures that other people students and staff understand our belief in an exceptional living and learning environment as promoted by Canadore College. Communication is a two-way street. If this problem solving mode does not work, speak to your faculty advisor for an appropriate referral.

How Does the College Deal With Inappropriate Behaviour?

As noted above, the College has the authority to take appropriate action in instances of departure from the expected standard of behaviour. The range of such actions includes reprimands, restricted privileges, short-term suspension, and dismissal from the Institution, and possible referral to police agencies for further action, as noted in the introduction of this document.

What are My Rights as a Student?

Any disciplinary action must be consistent with the principles of natural justice. As a Canadore College student you have the right to see in writing the details of any report that alleges inappropriate behaviour on your part. There is always an opportunity for the student to reply to an allegation and state his/her account of the event(s). Should you disagree about a report regarding you, a comprehensive process exists to review and explore your options.
