Protecting Human Rights In Support Of a Respectful College Community

Pursuant to the Ontario Human Rights Code, everyone has the right to learn and work in an environment that is free from harassment and discrimination on all prohibited grounds: race, ancestry, place of origin, colour, ethnic origin, citizenship, creed, sex, sexual orientation, disability, age, marital status, family status, same-sex partnership status or record of offences. It is the responsibility of every member of the college community to help create an environment that is free from harassment and discrimination. Work and learning are best performed in an environment of understanding and mutual respect for the dignity and rights of every individual. In accordance with the Human Rights Code, Canadore College commits to providing a learning and work environment that promotes positive attitudes, values, behaviours and practices among its students, staff, governing bodies and community. As articulated in “A Policy Framework for International Activities at Canadore College” and the “Framework for Relationships with First Nations and First Nation Students on Education and Training at Canadore College,” the College also commits to a learning and work environment that is respectful of cultural diversity.

Campus Safety

At Canadore College, the safety and security of our students and staff is a prime concern. Through special initiatives and audits, we strive to keep our surroundings comfortable and safe for everyone. A brochure outlining campus safety initiatives is available from the Security and Human Resources offices.

Injury

Canadore College is not responsible for any claims for damage relative to any accident or injury resulting from a student’s participation in a Canadore College program or activity.

Registration Information

What is a prerequisite?

A prerequisite is a course (or other qualification) required for entry into another course. It is the student’s responsibility to ensure that all prerequisites are met before registering.

Entry Requirements

You may enrol at Canadore College if you are 19 years of age or older or if you have earned an Ontario Secondary School Diploma/Ontario Secondary School Graduation Diploma or equivalent. General interest courses are intended primarily for adults unless otherwise specified. For information, contact Part-Time Registration, 705.474.7600 ext. 5420 or toll-free 800.519.3534 ext.1.

Tuition Costs

How does the College decide what to charge for its Continuing Education courses? With the exception of courses that begin with the codes OLE, VOC and GIC, all courses fall under the funding guidelines of the Ministry of Training, Colleges, and Universities (MTCU) and are costed at the rate of $5.62/contact hour. Additional Board of Governors-approved fees include a Student Activity Fee of $0.23/contact hour, a Student Centre Maintenance Fund of $0.38/contact hour, a Student Support Fee of $0.16/contact hour, and a Technology Fee of $0.18/contact hour. An Administration Fee is also charged for each course. This fee varies according to the type of course in which you are enrolled.

Courses with codes that begin with VOC and GIC are not eligible for funding from MTCU. The registration fee must cover all costs associated with offering these courses. Since courses have different costs, fees are determined on an individual course basis and often vary from one course to another.

Senior Citizens’ Fees

Senior citizens 55 and older are eligible for a 15% discount on the tuition fee portion on all continuing education courses. In addition, financial assistance is available for candidates who qualify. There may also be an additional material fee charge.

Audit Status

Audit status applies when a student is registered in a credit course but will not be receiving a credit. Audit status must be specified at the time of registration. It is a privilege, not a right. All prerequisite requirements are applicable to audited courses and students will be limited to a maximum of two audits subjects per academic year. Permission to register for audit status must be obtained from the appropriate program coordinator and, where applicable, the faculty advisor.

Tuition fees for audited courses and credit courses are the same, but the student is not entitled to examination or other evaluation privileges, nor can he or she receive credit for the audited course. An audit student may not transfer to credit status.

Note: Approval for audit status is granted after full-time registration is complete, and is subject to space availability. Priority is always given to students seeking credit status.

Textbooks and Materials

In all courses, the purchase of textbooks and materials is the responsibility of the student. Textbook lists are available on Canadore’s Continuing Education website at www.canadorec.on.ca/ContinuingEducation.

Textbooks for classroom, Contact North and correspondence courses can be purchased from the Campus Shop at www.efollett.com.

The Campus Shop does not carry most OntarioLearn textbooks. Textbooks for OntarioLearn courses can be purchased from www.textnet.ca.

Some exceptions may apply.

Refunds and Withdrawal from a Course

Withdrawal from a course is the student’s responsibility and all requests must be processed through the Part-Time Registration Office. Non-attendance in classes does not constitute a notice of withdrawal. If a student withdraws before the second scheduled class, tuition fees less a $15 processing fee will be refunded. After the second scheduled class, fees are neither transferable nor refundable.

Refunds and Withdrawal from a Correspondence Course

If a student withdraws during the first calendar month of a correspondence course, tuition fees less a $15 administrative fee will be refunded. After the first month of the course, fees are neither transferable nor refundable.

Refunds and Withdrawal from an OntarioLearn Course

If a student withdraws during the first two weeks of an OntarioLearn course, tuition fees less a $15 administrative fee will be refunded. After the first two weeks of the course, fees are neither transferable nor refundable.

Refunds and Withdrawal from a Weekend Course or Seminar

Tuition fees, less a $15 processing fee, will be refunded for cancellations received by 4:00 pm two business days prior to the start of the course(s). Cancellations received after this deadline are neither transferable nor refundable.

Refunds and Withdrawal from a Computer Workshop

Tuition fees, less a $15 processing fee, will be refunded for cancellations received by 4:00 pm two business days prior to the start of the workshop. Cancellations received after this deadline are neither transferable nor refundable. The full fee is payable if a participant fails to attend, however, a delegate substitution is permitted up to and including the first day of the workshop.

Note to Late Registrants

We regret that exceptions to the Refunds and Withdrawal Policy cannot be made for students who register late for a course. There will be no refunds issued on late registrations.

Waiting Lists

If you apply for a course that is filled, you may ask to have your name added to a waiting list. The office will contact you if a vacancy becomes available in the class or another section is added. Prospective students are contacted in the order in which their names appear on the waiting list.

Academic Policies

College Cancellation Policy

Canadore College reserves the right to postpone, combine, or cancel classes, limit registration, and/or change instructors. If insufficient enrolment causes the cancellation of a course, fees will be fully refunded or transferred (space permitting) to another subject of your choice in the same semester.

Transfer Credits

Exemptions from Canadore College course and appropriate credits without grades may be awarded for postsecondary courses that students have completed elsewhere, provided the objectives of these courses are equivalent to the objectives of Canadore courses and provided the students have earned at least 60 per cent (a “C” grade) or better. If course equivalency cannot be satisfactorily demonstrated, students may request permission to earn the credits through a challenge examination (see PLAR below).

Prior Learning Assessment and Recognition (PLAR)

PLAR at Canadore College provides opportunities for students to access postsecondary education based on their demonstration of learning through their life and work experience.

Through PLAR, courses can be challenged and credit awarded. Challenges can take many forms. The form of the challenge is set by subject-expert program faculty and may be written, oral or skill-based. If students achieve the minimum normal passing grade for the course in the challenge, appropriate credit for that course will be awarded.

The administration fee for each course challenged within the PLAR process, set by the Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities, is $107.58 (fees subject to change). The granting of prior learning credits does not guarantee entry into any program of studies. You may obtain information on whether a course is available for challenge by contacting the Continuing Education office at 705.474.7600 ext. 5600.
