Practical Nursing
Intakes: September, January
(*Intake every two years at West Parry Sound Campus - September starts only)
Train for a career in this important health field in Canadore’s leading-edge simulated nursing laboratory. The lab is equipped with interactive mannequins that speak and replicate real symptoms, on which students act out common medical emergencies. Training culminates with an seven-week, pre-graduate placement experience working with a registered practical nurse. Our nursing graduates are sought-after all over the world, independently or as part of a health care team.
Note: This program is offered in North Bay and Parry Sound.
New Course Offering
(CAP 100) Collaborating Across Professions
This general education course will help students in health and human service programs learn how to collaborate with other professions prior to graduation. The course requires students to interact interprofessionally with other groups of students to learn with, from and about each other.
REGISTRATION AND THE REGULATORY BODY
In Ontario, the Regulated Health Professions Act (RHPA) and the Nurses Act have conditions for provincial registration that impact Ontario students entering and completing the Practical Nursing program and writing the Canadian Practical Nurse Registration Examination (CPNRE).
These conditions require students to:
- be a Canadian citizen or a permanent resident of Canada or authorized under the Immigration Act (Canada);
- not have been convicted of a criminal offence or an offence under the Narcotic Control Act and the Food and Drug Act;
- not have been the subject of proceedings with respect to professional misconduct, incompetence, or incapacity in another health profession in Ontario or in nursing in another jurisdiction;
- not be suffering from a mental or physical disorder which makes it desirable in the public interest that the person not practice.
Provided they meet the conditions stated above, graduates of this program are eligible to write the Canadian Practical Nurse Registration Examination. The College of Nurses of Ontario grants a certificate of registration to practice as a Registered Practical Nurse (RPN) to all candidates who succeed in the examination and meet the requirements of the RHPA and the Nursing Act.
Further Your Education
Graduates from the Canadore Practical Nursing Diploma program are eligible to apply to the PN-BScN program at Nipissing University. This program allows a Practical Nurse to complete their degree in three years.
